Botox is an injectable neurotoxin, that has been approved by FDA for the treatment of various ailments such as treatment of wrinkles, chronic migraines, limb spasticity, axillary hyperhidrosis, cervical dystonia, strabismus, and blepharospasm. Safe dosage of Botox:

  • 2500-3000 units are lethal for human administration, which is never ever applied by a well-experienced physician.
  • 4-25units are applied for the clinical purposes.
  • 300units of Botox are applied for therapeutic purposes such as muscle spasticity, overactivity of nerves, chronic migraine headaches etc.
  • When the dosage is greater than 360 cumulative units in 3 months duration, there has been no life-threatening conditions found as per research. The only weakness of the muscles and pain in leg were the dragonized symptoms that gradually reduces.

Botox side effects:

Botulism poisoning is known to occur because of canning and packaging problems related to food which leads to life-threatening conditions. But in spite of being derived from botulism, Botox is not poisonous, because its diluted form is administered to the patients, in very small amounts.

Botulism affects people when they are exposed to huge doses of the bacteria through food, water or soil. But, till date, no one has reported contracting botulism after the application of Botox shots.

Just like other drugs, Botox also has certain potential side effects which people experience while they are administered with Botox doses.

The side-effects are enumerated below:

  1. The occurrence of allergic reactions such as rash, itching.
  2. Headache-This is the result of the injector’s wrong technique of injecting the Botox. If this occurs, one can get relief within 24-48 hours.
  3. Experiencing pain in the neck or back portion of the body.
  4. An occurrence of the stiffness of the muscles.
  5. Facing difficulty while swallowing.
  6. Experiencing shortness of breath.
  7. Nauseatic sensation.
  8. The occurrence of diarrhea.
  9. Experiencing pain in the stomach.
  10. Loss of appetite.
  11. Experiencing weakness in the muscles.
  12. Small and fine hypodermic needles are used for injecting the Botox. So, there are chances of occurrence of reaction in the site where the injection is applied, which includes bruises, bleeding, pain, redness, swelling or even the chances of contracting an infection.
  13. The occurrence of fever.
  14. A cough along with soreness of the throat because of the cold symptoms.
  15. Experiencing runny nose and flu-like symptoms.
  16. Contracting respiratory infections.
  17. Feelings of dizziness.

Contracting problems related to the eyes such as keratitis which is the inflammation of the cornea, dryness of eyes, ptosis which is the dropping of the eyelid, itchiness in the eyes, double vision, eye irritation, tearing, exaggerated sensitivity to light, reduction in blinking, and swelling of the eyelid or even bruising may occur after the treatment for blepharospasm.
    The eyelid drooping usually occurs in 2 weeks from the date of treatment and can be reduced in another 2 weeks.
    It is necessary to avoid exercising and rubbing the area where Botox is injected till 4-6 hours after the treatment. If a professional injects the Botox, such symptoms are significantly reduced.
  27. Fake appearance:
    When excess Botox is administered, it leads to a frozen, shiny and fake appearance which might not be visually appealing to some.SO it is necessary to discuss with the doctor, the type of appearance one desires, according to which the treatment can be carried out.

Precautions to be exercised during Botox treatment:

Botox provides best results when administered with precision. A good physician examines the face carefully and provides an expert opinion that is best for the person.

The precautions that need to be exercised are enumerated as under:

  1. The main reason behind most of the side-effects is the lack of expertise of the physician. So, it is strictly recommended to get Botox treatment from a certified experienced physician with a good track record regarding such practices, which leave very less chance of occurrence of a  side-effect.
  2. It is necessary to be cautious while administering Botox with other agents such as aminoglycosides, curare which can have an impact on the neuromuscular functionality and might enhance the impact of botulinum toxin or Botox.
  3. It is better to avoid Botox shots during pregnancy. Lactating mothers should also avoid it, to prevent any potential side effect on the newborn.
  4. The physicians should be aware of all the medications taken by the patients including all the herbal, non-herbal, prescribed and non-prescribed drugs being taken.
  5. Botox should be avoided in case a person is allergic to any constituent of Botox.
  6. It should not be administered if a person has urinary tract infection or urinary incontinence.
  7. If a person from any disease related to the muscles and nerves such as Lou Gehrig’s disease, he must not use Botox for treatment.
  8. Persons who intend to have a facial surgery or who had one in the near past should avoid the treatment.
  9. This should be avoided in case a person has breathing problems.
  10. Swelling and bruises caused by the treatment can be prevented by taking oral arnica and/or bromelain on the day when the treatment is done. Cold ice packs can also be beneficial.
  11. One should avoid Aspirin and nonsteroidal agents, such as Advil and Motrin10 days, before the treatment has to be initiated, in order to reduce the probability of occurrence of bruises.
